How Things Break The Challenger Incident

The Challenger disaster represented a watershed moment for NASA’s Space Shuttle program. Approximately one minute after liftoff, seal failure in a solid rocket booster field joint caused the shuttle to break apart, resulting in the loss of seven astronauts. Subsequent investigations would reveal how a confluence of organizational, ethical, and engineering factors contributed to this tragedy.

This webinar explores the technical factors leading to the Challenger Disaster. The stiffness of various joint designs are evaluated using finite element analysis. Characteristics of differing modeling techniques and their applicability are also discussed.
