The Biggest 3D Printing Trends of 2018

Watch on YouTube

Hi, I’m Adam from CADimensions. As someone who works with 3D printers every day, I wanted to know what the biggest trends in the field are. For this, I went to Google Trends.

Google Trends analyzes what people are searching for all over the world, and is able to tell us the relative popularity of any search term over time.

So, let’s go to google trends, and select “3D Printing” as a topic. Then, we will set our time range to all of 2018 and we can see all kinds of data pop up. We can see how popular 3D printing was throughout the year, and what states were most interested in 3D printing. I am looking for the biggest trends in 3D printing.

The bottom two tables are where things get interesting, where we can pull major trends from. Related topics and related queries are ranked based on how much they increased in popularity in 2018. Four out of the top five related queries mention the “Ender 3”!

Related topics look a little strange. It seems odd that the biggest related topic to 3D printing would be a novel. You can see that all of its related topics and queries are related to 3D printing and the Ender 3. When you search for the book, it says the novel is a part of the “Ender’s Game” series, so I think it ended up becoming more popular because of the name of the Ender 3 3D Printer. It’s a cheap hobby-level 3D printer that got really popular in 2018.

Other top related topics are all around guns, from the supreme court case last year. Let’s investigate the large spike in popularity over time by setting our date range from the beginning to the end of the spike. Looking at the related topics and queries, it looks like it was entirely caused by the press around 3D printed firearms.

If we set the timeline for the past five years, you can still see the spike in popularity! The 3D printed gun controversy caused 3D printing to be searched for more than anything else for over five years. If we look at 2017 just for fun, you can see the related topics are much more diverse and less controversial than the 3D printed firearm debate.

Okay, back to 2018, and let’s look at the related queries a little closer. If we ignore anything about the ender 3 and guns – our first two trends – I noticed there were multiple listings for 3D printed houses. I noticed the ten thousand dollar 3D printed house all over facebook, and it looks like the rest of the world went a little crazy over it too. It was made by a company called Icon3D.

Well, there you have it. According to Google Trends, which tracks what people are searching for, the 3 biggest trends in 3D printing for 2018 were: 3D printed houses, 3D printed guns and the Ender 3 Hobby 3D printer. What will 2019 bring us? We will just have to wait and see. I’m Adam from CADimensions and thank you for watching.
